CFWD - What’s In It for Women?
The Coalition Government has an extensive programme of constitutional and political reform, but to date there has been very little discussion about increasing the diversity of parliament. The recent Speaker’s Conference Report, which was produced before the general election, made a number of recommendations, but seems to have sunk without trace. The new reform proposals include a referendum on AV, fewer constituencies, and an elected House of Lords. We’d like to know what you think about some of this, so we’ve put together a quick survey for you to complete. It only takes a few minutes, but it would help us to assess what women (and men) are thinking about the issues it covers. All the data it collects is held securely, and not passed on to anyone else, and we’ll be publishing the results in September. You can fill the survey in using this link: What's In It for Women: Reform Survey. Thank you in advance!

The Scottishy Women's Convention has been holding a series of roadshows around the Highlands to consult with women about iisues of public policy. previous roadshows have been about poverty, education and violence. This year with public sector cuts on the horizon the SWC has been seeking women's views on public spending and public sector budget cuts. Discussions have been around three key questions: what services in your area do you believe should be protected? If you were promoting your area as a place to move to, what would uyou highlight? And finally, what would you like the Scottish governmentto change about your area? Responses to these question can be sent sheree at W@W where they will be collated and forwarded to the SWC for inclusion in their Roadshow Report 2010.

CLOSED Charging for Services

Are the public and users of services able to pay more for the services they receive?

What level of increase would be acceptable to you if it meant the service continued? Budget Leader's Blog

CLOSED - How can individuals and communities contribute? What more could individuals and communities do for themselves?

There is a long history of communities owning and managing community assets in the Highlands, e.g. community forests, community swimming pools, village halls and harbours. We benefit from high levels of volunteering; 29% of our adult population volunteer in some way and over half do so in more than one activity and more than once a week. Is there an appetite for communities and individuals to do more?

For example, we spend £3.9m on street cleaning and litter collection. We also spend £4.3m on grounds maintenance, flower beds and play areas. Could community involvement help to reduce these costs by £1m? What else can we do to be less tolerant of people dropping litter? Should we fine more people and ask the Scottish Government to make fines higher?  Further Potential Savings to 2013 = £1m To find out more or to take part in the process visit the Budget Leader's Blog
