Starts: 09:00
Ends: 17:00

Islam and Violence against Women

Workshop run by AMINA, The Muslim Women’s Resource Centre, Dundee.

One day intensive session on Islam as a faith, and the beliefs and values of its followers. It will be about setting the context, religiously (egalitarian values), historically, socially (including effects of colonialism/patriarchy) and how this has affected Muslim women in contemporary society and what the issues are in today’s society (terrorism, Islamophobia) which also affects them. We will also discuss the roles and obligations of Muslim women, identity issues, and the importance of faith as a marker of identity for minorities living in the West. The training is intended to also allow participants to understand the issues surrounding violence against women such as domestic abuse, rape, forced marriage, FGM and honor killing from a faith perspective and the role faith plays in understanding them. It will offer participants the chance to engage in an open and frank environment.
We will cover culture, religion and the effects of patriarchy (all very closely linked but there are subtle differences) on interpretations of faith, ethics and honour. Participants will have the opportunity to explore the cultural and patriarchal dimensions associated with the perpetration of violence against women.
The training is intended give participants the capacity to identify the difference between culture and faith and how the two interact together in a complex way.
