Welcome to the Women@Work e-bulletin! It contains information from the EQUALITIES UPDATE produced by Highland Council and also distributed by the Highlands & Islands Equality Forum, and links to newsletters, press articles and other information which have been received by W@W, together with links to what’s new on the Women@Work website.

  • W@W is expanding! We are starting a new local group for Caithnessand Sutherland, and will be rolling out events after the summer. If you are based in this area, or have colleagues and friends who might want to become involved, please let us know! Frances Powell, W@W co-ordinator will offer an introduction to the WEA’s Women@Work project and an assertiveness taster session at Brora Learning Centre on Tuesday 23rd June, 12-1:30. A similar event is planned for Thurso on 2nd July; contact the WEA office for more details.
  •  Women@Work network members who wish to promote their own business or services across the network can have a page on the W@W website – for details see member's page on the W@W website or contact us by email on womenatwork@weascotland.org.uk

What’s in the news and newsletters …
  •  The government launched its Equality Bill at the end of April. The Fawcett Society and Unison have organised an open public rally on 8th of June at the Houses of Parliament to urge stronger measures in the bill to end the pay gap.
  • Fawcett Society has published a report on the criminal justice system (‘Engendering Justice – from Policy to Practice’). The report found widespread discrimination in practices and attitudes towards women across the criminal justice system, for women offenders and those working in the system.
  • The European Women’s Lobby 50/50 Campaign for Democracy published a Gender Audit Report of Electoral Lists and Political Programmes on 20 May 2009, in view of the European elections of 4-7 June 2009.

30 April 09 Equal pay cases start in the DfT 
The start of a major equal pay case brought by PCS in the Department for Transport (DfT) where there is a 21% gender pay gap.

04 May 09 Fawcett launches Rosa Parks bus ad to boost black women's votes
Five black women rode a Londonbus to launch a new Fawcett Society ad to encourage more black women to exercise their right to vote and to promote Your Voice, Fawcett's new guide to democracy for ethnic-minority women.

07 May 09 Old Firm domestic abuse warning
Police are to visit homes with a history of domestic abuse ahead of this weekend 's Old Firm title clash.

12 May 09 Partners Join Forces to Reduce Hate Incidents in the Highlands Multi agency partners have launched the ‘Hate Free Highland’ website which aims to generate awareness of prejudice and discrimination and encourage more people to report these hate incidents via the online reporting system.

13 May 09 New health taskforce to spot signs of violence against women
A new taskforce of health professionals working together to spot early signs of violence and abuse against women and girls, investigate the scale of the problem and ensure victims across the NHS get the support they need.

13 May 09 Criminal justice system 'institutionally sexist' finds new report
A new report published by Fawcett's Commission on Women and the Criminal Justice System finds widespread discrimination in practices and attitudes towards women across the criminal justice system.

13 May 09 Equalities minister to open Women's Leadership Network conference in June Maria Eagle MP, the parliamentary under-secretary of state at the Government Equalities Office, will open the Women’s Leadership Network second annual conference.

20 May 09 Responding to Discrimination: The Geography and Geometry of Advice Provision in England, Scotland and Wales This report, which was commissioned by the Equality and Human Rights Commission, reviews the provision of legal advice and representation in England, Scotland and Wales on the equality and human rights enactments.
