Pregnancy Discrimination at Work

On October 1, 2006, the Department of Trade & Industry (DTI) published a UK Pregnancy and Work leaflet on its website alongside revised guidance - http://www.dti.gov.uk/employment/workandfamilies/maternity-leave-pay/guidance/page21116.html - on the new maternity rights which came into effect that day to benefit women whose babies are due on or after April 1, 2007.

The leaflet summarises the rights of both pregnant employees and their employers and their responsibilities towards each other. It can be downloaded as a pdf file from the DTI website in two parts:

04 Oct 06 ECJ rejects equal pay claim
A case hailed as “the most important equal pay claim in the last 10 years”, the European Court of Justice held it is not necessary for an employer to provide objective justification for pay disparities resulting from “length of service” criteria.  CIPD still strongly advise employers to review their reward schemes.

Contrary to media speculation, the decision in the Bernadette Cadman case puts it beyond question that employers can be challenged by women who can provide evidence that casts serious doubt that longer service actually leads to better performance.

09 Oct 06 Sally Bing awarded £58,697 in sexual harassment case against former town Mayor An Exeter employment tribunal today ordered the former mayor of Chard, Somerset to pay £33,697 in damages to a former town clerk who brought a successful claim of sexual harassment.

13 Oct 06 Glasgow agrees equal pay deal
Glasgow City Council has agreed a new pay deal for its workforce, which will implement the national Single Status Agreement.

25 Oct 06 Pay gap translates into a loss of around £330,000 over a woman's working life The EOC says the pay gap isn't closing fast enough, and its not just the women themselves who are taking a loss – employers are too.
