Women are living longer but are they living healthier
Posted on: Wednesday 21st December 2011
New research from the Scottish Public Health Observatory shows that while men might a lower life expectancy that women, they spend relatively more time in good health.Life expectancy is an estimate of how many years we might be expected to live, 'healthy life expectancy' is an estimate of how many years we might live in a 'healthy' state.
The most recent annual estimates for Scotland show that while boys born in 2010 can be expected to 76.3 years on average, only 59.5 of these in a 'healthy' state.
Girls born in 2010 would be expected to live 80.7 years on average, 61.9 of these years being 'healthy'.
This means that while women might be living longer than men not all of those years are spent in good health.
