The UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is a global policy making body dedicated to the advancement of women. It meets each year to address the progress towards equality of women around the world and the theme of this year’s session was ‘The empowerment of rural women and their role in poverty and hunger eradication and current challenges’. It’s extremely worrying that the member states were unable to adopt agreed conclusions this year as the representatives of some states argued for the preservation of cultural, traditional and moral practices which in effect override the human rights of women. Find out more
Elaine Cameron will give an overview of her experience as a delegate and the debate that took place and this will be followed by a discussion of what this failure of the CSW signals for women.
